Backgammon: instructions and practice

Open Backgammon, check the instructions and begin a round. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Use the example below to understand a decision. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

One thing to notice as you play

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Make the next step deliberately.

What counts as success

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

The order of play

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Input guidance

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

One way to understand the rules

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Notice the change in the playing area.

Where a round can go wrong

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
